Dr. Esther Ngumbi is an Assistant Professor of Entomology and African American Studies at the University of Illinois and a champion for change around issues of hunger, gender, education, youth activism, agriculture, sustainability, and public service. Inducted to the National Academy of Inventors, Dr. Ngumbi received three U.S. patents for her research in basic and applied aspects of using microbial inoculants to promote growth and enhance tolerance to drought stress in crops. Beyond peer-reviewed research, she has published over a hundred op-ed and feature articles for science publications and mainstream media outlets on topics related to agricultural sustainability, global food security, immigrant rights, and African and African American culture and representation in science and popular media. The American Association for the Advancement of Science recognized her in 2021 with the Mani L. Bhaumik Award for Public Engagement with Science. She has served as a mentor in President Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative, the Clinton Global University Initiative, and Akili Dada. As a social entrepreneur, Dr. Ngumbi founded Spring Break Kenya, The Dr. Ndumi Faulu Academy, and Oyeska Greens, an agriculture start-up that mobilizes farmers and leads efforts to make the Kenyan Coast the next hub where agriculture, green house technology, entrepreneurship and smart marketing using cell phone technology can intersect to produce an everlasting change.
