MSF Alumni - Sample List of Companies & Roles
Dear MSF students,
Hi, for students seeking opportunities, one of the more effective ways to stay organized in your job search is to create a “Target Company/Role List” so that you have a better idea of what skills/experience your target company or industry is looking for when they recruit (which will help when you write your resume, LinkedIn profile, cover letter, and prepare for interviews).
DISCOVERING COMPANIES AND ROLES
But how do you discover companies and roles if you’re still in the exploration stage? The key is to be resourceful. Here are a few ways:
- Keep track of the companies who participate in our Illinois on-campus recruiting activities (e.g. Gies Career Fairs, employer information sessions posted on Handshake). For example, if you attend an employer’s info session or chat with someone from the career fair and you are interested in their firm, you should include it on your target list.
- Read the Gies Career Services newsletters “Job Corner” and “Highlighted Career Events” where we highlight companies and roles that may be of interest to MSF students. If you missed any of our newsletters, you can access archived copies on Gies Groups > MSF page > Announcements tab
- Browse through resources such as Vault.com (free access for current students). I recommend checking out their e-guides “Top 50 Banking Employers” and “Top 25 Asia-Pacific Banking Employers”.
- Browse external job sites (e.g., LinkedIn, Glassdoor, Wall Street Oasis, Careernomics, etc.). If you are attracted to specific roles, consider researching the company to learn more and include it on your target list.
- Tap into your own professional and personal connections to connect with people who are working in your interest area. Tip: You can also discover companies by browsing through their LinkedIn profile to get a sense of not only which companies they currently work for but also the companies they have previously worked for.
- Last but not least, find out where our MSF alumni are currently working (or have worked).
