Get Ready For Gies

The "Get Ready for Gies" series offers an enriching introduction for incoming graduate students to the vibrant community and academic excellence at Gies College of Business. Designed to ease the transition into graduate life, the program comprises a series of sessions that cover a broad spectrum of experiences and opportunities available at the college.
 
You will gain insights into student life, exploring both academic and extracurricular activities that make the campus experience unique. You will learn about the rich array of hands-on experiences that complement classroom learning, including consulting projects, startups, and leadership roles that are integral to Gies' practical learning approach. Networking sessions are specifically designed to foster connections among the diverse student body, encouraging personal sharing and the development of a supportive peer network. Furthermore, a special session featuring a faculty-led lecture provides a taste of the innovative and interactive classroom environment, showcasing the college's commitment to challenging conventional thinking and encouraging creativity.

    Know Before You Go - Packing & Arrival 101

    Are you new to the Champaign-Urbana area or even to the USA? If so, you likely have a lot of questions about your big move to here such as "What do I need to bring? What to expect at the U.S. Customs and Border Protection? What is the weather like? How do I find housing/a bank/ a cellphone plan?" In this session, our current students, recent alums and staff are happy to share with you their tips and "lesson learned" as a new bee here. We will talk about all the things you need to know before and right after you arrive to Champaign-Urbana.

    Get to Know Your Network

    During this session, you’ll get to meet fellow graduate students from all over the globe in a fun and engaging way. We will poll the group to find common interests and work/study styles. We’ll use a “show and tell” format, with each student taking a short turn to share something meaningful about themselves using an object (flag of your home country, a picture, an award, etc) as great way for you to tell everyone something about yourself and for you to get to know your classmates on a more personal level. We will also breakout into programs so you can see who you will be working alongside in your in time at Gies. You’ll enjoy this opportunity to start developing new friendships and your support network.

    Watch and Learn - A Mock Class with Professor Jeffrey Loewenstein

    Gies Business faculty – renowned around the world by the business community – guide students to challenge assumptions, to be inventive, and to develop their own path. Our faculty lead classes that are both interactive and highly engaging. To give you an idea of how classes look, feel, and work, a Gies faculty member will provide a mock class.     Preparing You For Success - Gies Professional Development and Experiential Learning

    There are many opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience at Gies. During this session, you’ll hear more about ways you can get involved beyond the classroom to help you enhance your knowledge and skills in areas like consulting, startups, and emerging businesses. In addition, we will share information about our valuable resources to assist in your personal career journey.     We are excited to have you here next month! The UIUC Gies Academic Advisors want to meet with you to give an overview of the Course Registration process and your Study Plan for the Gies Graduate Programs. We strongly encourage you to join this Zoom session to prepare for your upcoming graduate study at Gies! We will answer any questions you might have about course selection, class schedules, specializations/concentrations, etc. There is a lot of important information to cover in the meeting.
