The Department of Educational Psychology, Division of Counseling Psychology offers counseling sessions to volunteers each spring through the Counseling Training Project. The purpose of this project is for counselors-in-training to develop skills such as empathic listening, establishing rapport, accurate understanding and reflection, and helping clients clarify concerns, goals, and strengths. You will participate in six 45-minute sessions at once-a-week. Potential benefits for you include having a beginning counselor listen to and talk with you about a concern of your choice such as school or work stress, relationship concerns, family concerns, or other general stress, and to identify your strengths. This experience is not suitable for individuals with significant mental health or substance use concerns, or who have experienced a very recent significant loss or trauma. If you are unsure if this project is appropriate for you, you can still express interest and go through the screening interview. After volunteers are interviewed, you will be contacted in mid-February about whether you have been matched with a counselor-in-training. If you have not been matched, alternative resources will be provided. All sessions will be video recorded for training purposes. Digital recordings and summary notes will be kept in a Box folder, specifically created to protect health information. Recordings and written records will be reviewed by your counselor and their supervisor, which will be deleted at the end of the semester. The doctoral level and advanced undergraduate counselors-in-training are a diverse group of students with a commitment to multicultural counseling and enrolled in EPSY 419 with Dr. Jarrett Lewis. They receive weekly supervision from advanced doctoral students enrolled in EPSY 520 C with Dr. Khuri.
