Emerging Business Leaders summer program: Resident Advisor positions (SU20)
This position requires a few meetings prior to the program start date, and a 100% time commitment for the duration of the program.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Sponsored by the Gies College of Business Office of Undergraduate Affairs, the Emerging Business Leaders Program (EBL) is an intensive two-week program that provides 30 high-achieving underrepresented minority high school students from across the country the opportunity to learn the Gies College of Business and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign faculty, staff, students, and alumni. Specifically, the program offers a keen insight into Business majors and careers including marketing, accountancy, finance, management, information systems, and entrepreneurship. Participants live in a Resident Hall on campus for the duration of the program: July 12-23, 2020.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Gies College of Business Access and Multicultural Engagement Team is looking for 5-6 Resident Advisors to assist with the daily operations of the program. The Resident Advisors will stay in the dormitories with the program participants and must be available for the duration of July 10-24, 2020. The Resident Advisors are supervised by the program Operations Director, and all positions report to the Business Undergraduate Assistant Dean.
Minimum Qualifications: Senior or Junior Illinois student standing; sophomores may be considered with exceptional previous experience. Must demonstrate high level of maturity and judgment, as Resident Advisors serve as role models, supervisors, and organizers. Ability to ensure a safe and productive living and learning environment for program participants. During the program, work schedule includes evening and weekend requirements, and Resident Advisors will have scheduled work shifts, but also will be on-call the entire program unless previously permitted by an administrator.
Other requirements: Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Team-oriented and fully committed to program events in support of staff, participants, and program goals. Overall responsibility to maintain safety and well-being of students while in the residence hall and throughout the program. This is inclusive of a drug-, tobacco-, and alcohol-free environment.
Position responsibilities:
1. Organize residence halls for student arrival. Help with student check-in process and orientation program. Help with check-out and student departures at the end of the program.
2. Work with other Resident Advisors and Operations Director to generate/plan inclusive activities in the dormitory, other on-campus locations, and off-campus to implement during the three-week program span.
3. Participate in classroom, extracurricular, and field trip experiences.
4. Meet daily with Operations Director and administrators to report on activities/issues and to offer suggestions to prevent problems/concerns. Work with administrators on any crises and emergencies that may arise.
5. Supervise and manage appropriate conduct and behavior of participants in all locations, including the dormitories. Counsel and encourage participants as needed.
6. Assist participants with program work, including preparation for final project presentations.
Compensation: Resident Advisors are paid $10/hour, with a maximum total gross payment of $1,500. Free housing and meals are provided.
