As you begin making course plans for Fall 2020, consider taking FIN 490, Business and Public Policy. This course will be taught by Professor Don Fullerton on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30pm to 4:50pm in 2007 BIF.
In this course students will learn to think critically about how government affects nearly every aspect of business. The public sector regulates labor market practices, financial market disclosures, international trade rules, worker safety, and environmental activities. It taxes corporate income, labor earnings, capital returns, and many purchases. The course will discuss public policy trade-offs between market efficiency vs. income redistribution, between the gains from having insurance vs. the inefficient behavioral responses that insurance may induce, and between the need to raise government revenue vs. the economic distortions created by taxation. While the primary analytical approach is grounded in basic economics, the course will also emphasize political, financial, and other aspects of the issues. Topics include social security and retirement policy, Medicare, Medicaid, financial regulation, and public insurance.
Students must be enrolled in a degree program in the Gies College of Business and have prior courses in basic principles of economics and other business disciplines. Grades will be based on participation, short assignments, a midterm, and final exam.
Schedule an appoinment with an undergraduate Gies academic advisor to discuss how this course may suit your interets.
