Math Placement Information

Leslie Lewis |  Associate Dir, Academic Success - Tuesday, March 26, 2019
 Proficiency/Placement

The ALEKS PPL system provides a best-match math placement for students, so they can have the best possible chance of success in our challenging classes.

For SUMMER 2019, students must have a passing ALEKS PPL score BEFORE registering for Math 112 (online), Math 115 (online), or Math 220 (on-campus, or select online self-paced class through netmath.illinois.edu). Only tests taken on Feb. 11, 2019 or later are valid for summer registration.

For FALL 2019, students must have a passing ALEKS PPL score BY AUGUST 30 (but no earlier than April 13, 2019). However, they are welcome to register before taking an ALEKS placement exam--especially those with April 1-12 time tickets!!

Here are the cutoffs:

Math 112: 40%-64%, with recommended score of 50-64%

Math 115: 65% or higher

Math 220: 80% or higher

Math 221: 80% or higher (and also had at least ONE YEAR of calculus in high school)

Math 234 (available through online self-paced NetMath): 65% or higher

Freshman ALEKS accounts are valid for 12 months or 5 tests, whichever comes first. Current freshmen planning to take a fall ALEKS-prerequisite class might mark their calendars for April 13, so they can do an assessment before their freshman account expires.

Otherwise, students can purchase a new ALEKS account if theirs is expired or they've used all their attempts. They MUST go through our link to make sure they get the U of I Math Placement Exam and avoid paying for some other ALEKS product.

The link to the system itself and much related information are both found at

https://math.illinois.edu

Students whose questions are not answered by that website are welcome to contact the Math Department at  mathadvising@illinois.edu--and it's very helpful if they include your name and 9-digit UIN.
