The Department of Mathematics offers proficiency examinations in Math 220, 225, 231, 241, 285, 286, and 415 to allow students to obtain college credit by demonstrating proficiency in the course material. A proficiency examination is comparable to a three-hour written final examination in that course, and a grade of B- or better is needed in order for course credit to be awarded. Proficiency examinations are not for placement or diagnostic purposes, but are only for awarding credit to students who demonstrate thorough knowledge of the course material.
The next proficiency exam is set for Saturday, October 2, 2021, 9 a.m. - 12 noon CDT (3 hours). Eligible students may take one exam at that sitting. Students wishing to take a second exam may sit for the next exam in January 2022. For more information visit the Department of Mathematics Proficiency Examinations webpage.
All Gies Undergraduate Students are required to complete a Business Core Math requirement. All Gies College of Business students are required to take CS 105 – Introduction to Computing: Non-Technical, which satisfies the Quantitative Reasoning (QR) 1 general education requirement. There are different options for completing the requirement based on your catalog year:
Gies Students entering fall 2021 and later
Students may choose a course from the following list to fulfill the second QR requirement:
- MATH 115 – Preparation for Calculus
- MATH 220 – Calculus
- MATH 221 – Calculus I
- MATH 231 – Calculus II
- MATH 234 – Calculus for Business (recommended for all students with an ALEKS score 65 or higher)
- STAT 100 – Statistics
You will most likely take either MATH 234 or STAT 100. Students with AP, IB, or A-level credit, or dual enrollment transfer credit for an equivalent course from the list on the right will not need to take an additional QR course.
Gies Students entering Fall 2020 and earlier...
Students are required to take Math 234 Calculus for Business. Students can also meet this requirement by taking or having credit for Math 220 or 221 Calculus I.
