New, Online French Proficiency Exam!

Leslie Lewis |  Associate Dir, Academic Success - Thursday, September 30, 2021
 Proficiency/Placement

Students who are familiar with the language of French may have the option to complete the French Profeciency Exam online to meet their Language other than English requirement.

A new, online French Proficiency Exam for Fall 2021 will be offered later in the semester. Once test administration details are finalized (e.g., the date, time, proctoring arrangements), a link to an online registration form will be posted on the Center For Innovation in Teaching and Learning's Placement and Proficency webpage. Please check back after October 15th for updates.

The exam will primarily assess your vocabulary, grammar, writing knowledge, and reading comprehension abilities and will cover material that is typically taught through the fourth level (high intermediate language learning).

Do you need just a French course placement recommendation?

  • If you are a new freshman or new transfer student for 2021-2022, you can log in here to take your placement test.

  • If you are a currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student, you can log in here to take the "French Placement Test for Non-Freshmen." After logging in with your NetID, simply enroll yourself in the test. You will see your placement results as soon as you finish. Results are good for either Fall 2021 or Spring 2022 course enrollment.

All Gies Undergraduate Students entering fall 2021 must complete up through the third level of a single language other than English. All Gies Undergraduate Students entering fall 2020 and earlier must complete up to the fourth level of one language or up to the third level of two languages.  Your advisor will be able to see what level of language you already completed in high school or your previous institution and determine whether you may need to take additional language courses.  Please schedule an appointment or visit Express Advising to speak with an Undergraduate Gies Advisor about your options for completing your Language other than English requirement.
