NOTE: The majority of career workshops and employer events will take place between September and October so if interested, we encourage you to set aside time to attend so that you have a strong foundation for next year’s recruiting cycle (for a recruiting timeline overview, please refer to the MSF career timeline handout that was distributed to students at the MSF Career Boot Camp)

Advanced LinkedIn Techniques

So you have a polished LinkedIn profile that presents you as a good candidate? Now let's work on utilizing LinkedIn for what it is really meant to do: online social networking! How do you find appropriate contacts? How do you respond to recruiters' messages? How do you use LinkedIn to apply for jobs? How do you continue to cultivate your LinkedIn image even after you found your job? Let's talk about it! Bring your computer or tablet as this will be a working session!

Cover Letter Writing

A cover letter should illustrate for a recruiter the applicant’s skills and experiences that address requirements for the position. Therefore, you need to write a targeted cover letter for every application that requests a cover letter! A generic cover letter will NOT get the recruiter’s attention! This workshop will help you with cover letter writing – whether you’re just getting started and want to learn basic approaches to cover letter writing, or you have a specific position for which you are drafting a cover letter.

Job Search Writing and Email Etiquette

Are you unsure about written networking with recruiters and alumni you have met at on-campus recruiting events, and other potential employers? This interactive workshop will build skills for communicating formally through email, such as thank-you and introductory emails. Bring your questions and ask the experts!

Cancellation Policy: If you have RSVPed for an event, and your plans change, please return to Gies Groups and cancel your reservation at least 24 hours before the event so that another student will be able to RSVP.

2019 International Career Festival (ICF) Career Competition
[for international students] Are you an international student who wants to be more competitive in today’s global job market? Do you want to develop the key skills needed for career success? If so, we strongly encourage you to enter the 3^rd annual 2019 INTERNATIONAL CAREER FESTIVAL elevator pitch competition. Registration is open for self-selected teams of two, and international students from all degree levels and majors are welcome to apply. Registration deadline has been extended to Sun, Oct 6th by 11:59 pm.

Employer-related events can be a great opportunity to gather knowledge about the organization and the type of candidate they are seeking. Even if you are not their target group, it doesn’t hurt to ask questions to build your knowledge base and build connections with company representatives. If you are seeking internships and the company is recruiting to fill full-time roles, use this opportunity to learn more about the company so that you’re prepared next year when you are ready to seek full-time roles!

Gies Career Services: Final Thoughts

• Although the Gies Business Fair is over and there aren’t as many employer information sessions, that doesn’t mean Fall recruiting is over! There are many employers who choose not to attend the fair or host an information session but they are still actively recruiting so please continue to monitor the Handshake job board, other job boards, company’s website, LinkedIn company page, tap into your personal and professional connections, etc.
• Be resourceful and leverage a mix of job search channels (on-campus recruiting and off-campus recruiting)
• Be aware that many listings have application deadlines so it’s important that you stay on top of the deadlines and submit your application at your earliest convenience.
• As mentioned, there are many more events out there so we encourage you to discover events/workshops on your own by browsing Gies Groups, Handshake, engaging with student organizations, subscribing to other campus unit newsletters, etc.
