Message from Associate Dean, Dr. Kevin Jackson

The recent headlines surrounding the admissions scandal, where wealthy parents essentially bribed their children’s way into elite colleges, reminds me of the loaded word, “privilege.” I say it’s “loaded” because we often aren’t sure what to make of the word. Today, here’s what I make of the word: 1) Being privileged isn’t something to feel guilty about. Most of us aren’t responsible for our privilege so it’s not something to apologize for. 2) Because we’re not responsible for it, we should be more grateful than proud of what privilege has brought us. 3) When we mistake privilege for entitlement, we make a grave error that can ruin our community. It is a great privilege to be part of our Gies family, but let’s be more grateful than proud, and let us respond to our gratefulness by being generous towards others.
