Career Services Notes for MSBA Students
Monday, September 23, 2019
Congratulations on a career fair well done last week! It was great to see everyone who stopped by the Career Advising Table at the entrance to the fair.
Keep in mind that for graduate students, career fairs are opportunities to make contacts and develop your professional networks. Many of the companies you talked to at the career fair are not currently hiring for the positions you are aiming for – but when they are ready to hire for your target positions, the professional connections you have built and maintained will help you find out about the opportunities, and prepare to succeed in the application process.
For companies that are moving on with recruiting immediately, the next step is an interview! Please let me know when you are invited to interview, so that Career Services can help you prepare. We can provide interview preparation, and many times we can connect you with an alumnus who can share his or her career experience and industry knowledge so that you interview as the obvious choice for the job.

ARC – 201 E Peabody Drive, Champaign, IL

Bring your I-Card for admission
Bring plenty of resumes!
122 Companies will be on campus to recruit students! Complete information is on Handshake.
Remember: if you are interested in a company and met recruiters at the Engineering or Gies Business career fairs, that’s even more reason to introduce yourself to recruiters at the ACES + LAS Career Fair. Very likely the same recruiters do not attend all the fairs, so stop by and introduce yourself and let the recruiter know what position you’re aiming for. Making a positive impression and developing a new contact at the company may increase the number of advocates you have within the company.
As I skimmed the list of participating companies, I thought that recruiters from the following companies would be interested in meeting MSBA students:
Addison Group
Archer Daniels Midland (ADM)
Bayer U.S.
Bunge North America
Cargill
Caterpillar
CNH Industrial
Coyote Logistics
Eli Lilly and Company – Manufacturing and Quality
Enterprise Holdings
Evercorn (looking for Japanese lanuage skills....)
Express Employment Professionals
John Deere
Kronos Foods Corporation
Mu Sigma Business Solutions
OSI Group
PepsiCo
Procter & Gamble
Sandia National Laboratories (U.S. citizenship required)
The Carle Foundation
University of Illinois Research Park and EnterpriseWorks
Zhaopin Ltd
Please check Handshake, and review all participating companies. You may find others that interest you! Take advantage of this opportunity to make new business contacts and discover new career opportunities.

Chinese Resume Reviews
NOTE: This information is repeated from the August 31 edition of “Career Services Notes”. With companies coming from China again this week, it is very important that you have both an English and a Chinese resume ready to give to recruiters.....
Note to students from Greater China: The University of Illinois is a ‘target school’ for recruiters from very prominent companies in Greater China! In the coming weeks you will have many opportunities to meet recruiters from Greater China on campus, as well as apply online for positions in Greater China. This means that in addition to your English resume, you need a Chinese resume!
When you search for a job in Mainland China, Taiwan or Hong Kong, you will likely be required to submit a Chinese version of your resume. Before you submit your application, get your Chinese resume reviewed by our Peer Career Advisors. If you have never written a Chinese (in Simplified or Traditional Chinese) resume before and would like guidance on how to start, drop by our office and our advisor can provide you with some useful resources and tips. (Note: look on Gies Groups, in the “Files” section, and then in the “Career Services Documents” folder where you will find 3 documents in both traditional and simplified Chinese: Chinese Resume Instructions, Chinese Resume Template, and Important Reminders if you are applying for jobs by email.) If you have written your resume in Chinese, bring a paper copy of your Chinese resume, and our advisor will help you improve your resume to impress recruiters in Mainland China, Taiwan or Hong Kong. This service will begin next Tuesday, September 3rd so if you are interested, we encourage you to drop by our office (1033 BIF).
Chinese Resume Reviews will be available in the Career Studio at specific times:
Tuesdays: 1:00pm – 3:00pm
Fridays: 10:00am – 12:00noon and 1:00pm – 3:00pm
Thanks for reading the entire newsletter. I am sure that you have questions, and situations will come up that Career Services can help you navigate.
When you have been invited to an interview, let me know so that Career Services can help you prepare. If you need to meet with me or Layla or a Peer Advisor for 30 minutes and the topic is not urgent, schedule an appointment on Gies Groups.
The Career Studio is open 10:00am until 4:00pm, Monday through Friday. NO APPOINTMENT NEEDED, and a Peer Career Advisor will assist you. Referrals to career advisors are made as appropriate.
This week I will be available through the Career Studio on Thursday afternoon, September 26, from 1:00pm until 4:00pm, if you want to find me to talk then.
Have a great week! I look forward to hearing your job search updates!
