Resources to Help you be Career Ready:

5 Tips to Help you Ace your Interviews

Interviews…

As you prepare for interviews or continue with your job search, below are 5 tips to help you ace your interviews.

1.   Research the Company, Industry, and Fully Understand the Job

In order to make your answers during your interview relevant to the position and company, you need to do your research on the company. As MBA candidates, you want to show that you are thinking about the organization strategically, not merely about the function into which you are being hired

2.    Connect your Experience with the Job or Company

Whether you are answering the “Tell me about yourself” or other behavioral interview questions, you want to illustrate the relevance of your prior experience to the job you’re interviewing for. Don’t make the assumption that your interviewer(s) will make the connection. Connect the dots for them!

3.    Have a “Why” Story for the Position/Company/Function/Industry

It is important to be able to articulate your motivation for the role. This is a difficult question to answer because we don’t always have a good reason beyond “I need a job after graduation.”

To answer this question, consider how the role fits into your longer-term career objectives or your interest in the industry. Remember that “Why are you interested in this position?” is not the same as “Why are you qualified for this position?” Variations of this question could include “Why are you interested in this company?” or “Why are you interested in [name of occupational function, e.g. consulting]?”

4.    Check Attitude and Watch your Non-Verbal Cues

No one wants to work with negative or pompous people. When interviewing, keep your attitude and answers positive. Speak about your accomplishments but stay humble. While you do not need to be overly enthusiastic, you will want to avoid being overly critical of past experiences or people you had previously worked with or are currently working with.

5.    For On-Site Interviews, the Whole Itinerary is your Interview

On-site interviews can feel like a marathon run; it is about pace and endurance.
