Career Services Notes for MSM Students
Sunday, September 8, 2019

Hi Everybody! It's weekend, so here's your newsletter to help you prepare for the coming week!

Thank you to everyone who attended career events and workshops, including the Research Park Block Party, Deserts with Deloitte and Networking, and EY Invasion Day.  I hope that you’re getting more comfortable having conversations, getting information on career opportunities, and building your professional network!

Use what you learned by participating in in these events to prepare for the Engineering Career Fair, coming to campus on Tuesday and Wednesday this week – September 10 and 11 – and the Gies Business Fair next week, Wednesday and Thursday, September 18 and 19.  More information about these fairs is below!

You are all strongly encouraged to attend all on-campus career fairs.  Many companies recruit students from several academic disciplines, yet attend only one of several career fairs on campus.  Companies compete for talent, and recruit in Fall Semester for positions to start after graduation next May. So NOW is the time for you to fully engage in your job search.  Inform yourself of what companies will be at which career fair(s), and plan to meet recruiters while on campus.  Being known by a company representative is key to being invited to interview!

If you have questions about your job search, come to Career Services in 1033 BIF -- the office which provides Career Services for students in Gies College of Business.  You may be aware of other career services offices, serving other student populations on campus.  The advisors who are best prepared to assist MSM students are here in Gies Career Services!

Note:  I heard from two MSTM alumni that they will be representing their companies at the Engineering Career Fair this year. I think these companies would be interested in students in the MSM program, if they had the opportunity to meet you!  Please research the company, and the positions posted on Handshake and the company website, and then take this opportunity to introduce yourself to:

Akshata Hire, MSTM ‘18. Business Associate with Gartner
Akshata wrote me:  In order to make the career fair easier for the students and for us, I have a small request.  Could you please share this pre-registration link with all the students? Link - http://bit.ly/UofIEngineeringCareerFair       Through this link, they will be able to submit their resumes prior to the event. If their resumes are already in the system, we would be able to spend more time answering their questions and less time in the resume collection process during the career fair.

Connor Lacher, MSTM ‘ 17.  Technology Consulting Senior Associate with RSM
Connor wrote me:  Tell the students to come say hello! We have many roles we are looking to fill on our team.

I looked through the participating company list and see many that you should be interested in!  The companies that will attend both the Engineering and Gies Business Fairs will have different recruiters at each event.  If you are interested in opportunities with that company, you are advised to meet the recruiters at both events.

Do your research, and talk with representatives of companies in your target industry, and who are recruiting for functional roles that interest you.  Some companies on the list that caught my eye as having opportunities (those listed in the Handshake Career Fair information are included, in parentheses) that should interest MSM students include:

  • Abbott

  • AbbVie (Operations Development Program)

  • Allstate Insurance Company –D3

Apply for Jobs on Handshake
NOTE:  Companies that hold interviews on campus will post positions on Handshake!  In order to be considered for an on-campus interview, you need to submit your resume on Handshake, for the one  position (most companies require that you select the ONE position you want to be considered for...) you would like to interview for.

In addition to applying on Handshake, all companies require that interested students apply on the company website.  Many companies are not allowed to hold an interview unless the applicant has applied on the company website.  When you meet recruiters at a career fair, make sure that you talk about the application requirements!  Then, do what the recruiter asks you to do!  Many companies give priority to applicants who promptly follow-through on instructions.

Position on Handshake - company has NOT scheduled campus recruiting events:
Schneider Electric Leadership Development Program
