December 11, 2019

Congratulations fall semester is almost over!

Soon, it will be time to rest, relax, and catch up with family and friends. Gies College of Business will close for the holidays beginning 3 p.m. on Friday (December 20, 2019). The College will re-open on January 2, 2020. I will have infrequent e-mail from December 23, 2019 through January 5, 2020. If something comes up and you cannot wait until January 6, 2020, you can text me or message me on What’s App.

In case you are looking for a little holiday spirit as you finish up your finals and apply to jobs – the University’s Dial-a-Carol service is there to spread holiday cheer and will be taking song requests through December 18th.

While you re-charge over the holidays, consider taking some time to prepare for spring recruiting, evaluate your resume and LinkedIn profile. Also, this is a great time of year to schedule informational interviews.

Here are 5 items and resources to keep you moving forward over the holiday break:

  1. Your LinkedIn Profile
  • The 31 Best LinkedIn Profile Tips for Job Seekers
  • Update your LinkedIn headline. This is the line right under your name. If your current headline is a position title or status (e.g. “Student at…” or “Seeking full-time opportunities in…”), change it. What THREE things do you want to be known for? Or what THREE functional areas are you looking to get into? You could also combine skills and function.

  • Allow Recruiters to Find You.

To enable recruiters to find you, go to your privacy settings and make sure you turn on “Sharing your profile when you click apply” and “Let recruiters know you’re open to opportunities.” (See below.)

  • Join Relevant LinkedIn Groups (max out on your quota of 50 groups)

LinkedIn Groups are a fantastic way to expand your network and reach out to individuals for FREE (i.e. without having to pay for a Premium account). To access LinkedIn Groups, go to the end of your profile and look for your Interests section. Click on “See all” and that would pull up the pop out box below.

Click on Groups to audit the groups you’re in. Essential groups that you should be in:

To “Discover” more groups, go to https://www.linkedin.com/groups/discover and explore. You can also use the search field at the top left corner on LinkedIn.com to find relevant groups. For instance, searching for “Product Management” resulted in 1,817 groups:

You can sign up for up to 50 groups, so make use of your quota.

  1. Preparing for Informational’s and Job Interviews

Industry research is essential to preparing for interviews and informational interviews.

Remember the Vast Library Resources for Industry and Company Research? Utilize these resources when preparing for your interviews and conversations:

Library Guides – Business Resources  (Market/Industry Research Tab and General Business Resources Tab)

Market/Industry/Business Research Links

First Research

First Research provides excellent industry overviews, recent developments through news updates, business challenges or issues for specific industries, financial information, and more.

Hoover's Academic Pro

Hoover's is a great market and industry research database but takes some practice. One of the most useful functions is its "Build A List" function, because you can create a list of companies to research by company location (you can browse by world region), industry, company size, and even keywords.

Mergent

Search using company name or ticker symbol. Provides synopsis, highlights of company and key financial and competitive information. Large number of international companies. Great resources for a company snapshot and quick prep report.

Lexis Nexis Academic Universe

Provides full-text and summaries of articles from over 40,000 newspapers, magazines, journals, and trade journals. In addition, you can use this database to generate lists of companies using criteria that you select. For example, the Get Company Info search box will lead you to company financials (M&A, SEC filings, Analyst Reports), competitors, IP (international patents and trademarks), and current news

  1. Resume Alignment (Video): Make Your MBA Resume and LinkedIn Profile Aligned and Aspirational
  2. Conduct your informational meetings or conversations.

  • The purpose of informational meetings or informational conversations is to learn about a company or a person’s experience in that function or a company. The long-term goal is to build a relationship with the person such that they become a mentor and advocate for you in your career. These individuals are not going to give you a job. You will still need to do the heavy lifting, but they can be champions for you in terms of referrals and introductions.
  • 3 Steps to a Perfect Informational Interview
  • Questions to Ask in an Informational Interview

  1. Apply for positions on Handshake, LinkedIn, Indeed.com… Remember that recruiters will continue to post positions over break, so use the advanced search to find positions in your target areas.
