Career Services Notes for MSTM Students
Saturday, January 25, 2020

Good Afternoon!  With on-campus career fairs next week, it’s high time to get ready!  This newsletter will guide you to resources to prepare, and events to attend to meet recruiters on campus.

As always, I strongly encourage you to go on Handshake to look for job postings that the companies who are coming to campus have posted, so you know the company’s focus in their campus recruiting efforts this semester. In addition, review the company website to see what positions are open, but not being recruited through campus recruiting.  As graduate students, your goal in attending career fairs, meet and greet opportunities, information sessions and other on-campus recruiting events is to meet professionals in your target industry and companies.  Build your professional network, to increase your understanding of the industry/company, and so that you will have people who can provide information that will help your job search going forward!

In this issue:

Career Studio
Engineering Career Fair – Tuesday and Wednesday
Gies Business Fair – Thursday
Career Fair Follow-Up
Company-Sponsored Recruiting Events on Campus
Capital One
Jobs on Handshake

Career Studio
10:00am - 4:00pm, Monday through Friday
Career Studio is where to come for answers to your quick 10-15 minute questions. No appointment necessary, just drop-in anytime between 10am and 4pm and a peer career advisor would be happy to help you! This is perfect for a quick resume update review, cover letter review, LinkedIn profile review, and using job search tools.

This week I will be an advisor in the the Career Studio on Monday and Wednesday afternoons, 1:00 – 4:00pm.  Please stop by to let me know how your job search is going, and what help I can offer.

Spring 2020 Engineering Career Fair – Tuesday and Wednesday
January 28 and 29, 2020
2:00pm – 6:00pm
ARC, 201 E Peabody Drive
Complete information on participating companies is on Handshake

198 Companies are registered to attend the Engineering Career Fair.  Note that some – and NOT all – companies will be at the Engineering Fair both Tuesday and Wednesday.  Use the filters on Handshake to sort and prepare your strategy.

As I review the companies coming to the Engineering Career Fair, I see companies where former MSTM students -- who are in my LinkedIn network -- have worked, including:

  • AGCO

  • Caterpillar

  • Ebco Inc.

  • Infosys

  • Julian Electric

  • Liferay

  • Medline Industries, Inc.

  • Micron Technology Inc.

  • Peak6 Investments

  • PricewaterhouseCoopers

  • Sandia National Laboratories (requires US citizenship)

  • Synchrony

  • Thyssenkrupp Forged Technologies

  • West Monroe Partners

  • Wolfram

So if you’re deciding what companies to meet, see if these companies are in your target industry, and if so, introduce yourself to the recruiter.

Some companies will attend both the Engineering Career Fair and the Gies Business Fair.  If you are interested in the company, take the opportunity to meet the recruiter(s) at both events!  Companies may bring different recruiters to each fair, and you want to be known by as many recruiters as possible.  These companies will be at both career fairs, and the (days at the fairs) are:

  • American Family Insurance (Wednesday and Thursday)

  • Bank of America (Wednesday and Thursday)

  • Bunn-O-Matic Corporation (Tuesday and Thursday)

  • Caterpillar, Inc. (Tuesday and Thursday)

  • Country Financial (Tuesday and Thursday)

  • Crowe LLP (Wednesday and Thursday)

  • Echo Global Logistics (Wednesday and Thursday)

  • Enfusion (Wednesday and Thursday)

  • Epic (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday)

  • Hormel Foods (Tuesday and Thursday)

  • Klein Tools (Wednesday and Thursday)

  • KPMG (Tuesday and Thursday)

  • Mars, Inc. (Wednesday and Thursday)

  • Medline Industries, Inc.  (Wednesday and Thursday)

  • Morningstar, Inc. (Tuesday and Thursday)

  • Paylocity (Wednesday and Thursday)

  • PepsiCo (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday)

  • State Farm Insurance (Tuesday and Thursday)

  • Synchrony (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday)

I hope this information inspires you to use Handshake to research the participating companies, and find those that interest you.  If a company recruits on campus, they expect interested students to introduce themselves at the event!  When recruiters review resumes submitted and select students to interview, one of the screening criteria is which applicants they have met at past events on campus.

Several Companies are new to the Illinois Gies Business Career Fair this year. Please research what they do – and if your interests align with the company’s business, make sure that you introduce yourself!  This is your chance to introduce the MSTM program, in addition to introducing yourself – and help the company see the value in considering MSTM students! The companies that seem to me to be a good fit for MSTM students are in bold.
