Resources to Help you be Career Ready: - Informational Interviews
“Hello, I’m a Gies Graduate student, and I would like to connect with you to tap into your network. I greatly appreciate your help.”
The line above is the actual text that a Gies Masters student sent to a prospective contact on LinkedIn. Needless to say, the contact did not accept the student’s request to connect.
In a separate correspondence, an alum made the following request to career services:
“As it is prime recruiting season, students are reaching out to me for direct connections to recruiters and employees at [the company I’m with]. I’m happy to talk with them about [the company] and help provide resources. However, can you please help set expectations that I will not be giving out direct contact information to [company] employees to students including recruiters?”
So my friendly reminder ÂÆ’ÿè…before you send that connection request - make sure to write a short personal message introducing yourself and mentioning why you would like to connect with them (other than that you want to tap into their network).
When reaching out to alumni, consider the role of the alumnus in the company. Speak with the alumni about their experience in the company. Build trust and a relationship with the alumni before asking for a referral; trust is not established through one exchange. Don’t turn off alums who can be our and your most valuable connections into target companies. Here is an example of a productive networking meeting.(non-COVID example).
I am also happy to review your connection request messages.
This is the perfect time of year to review your LAMP list and continue reaching out to alumni or professionals in relevant roles to set-up informational interviews as recruiting activities slow down. In my upcoming newsletters, I will share with you some key things to do over winter break to re-ignite your career search after the holidays.
