Career Services Notes for MSTM Students
Saturday, October 19, 2019
(This is the second try to send Career Services Notes today. My apologies if you have already received this....the message I received was blank, so I'm re-sending it!!! Dede)
Happy Homecoming, everyone! Congratulations Illini on Victory over Wisconsin! I hope everyone participated in the festivities – and have made plans to return for future Homecoming celebrations. Next year you'll be alumni -- We’re always happy when alumni return to campus!
Congratulations to students who have had interviews. Let me know your status with the company, so I can help you prepare for what’s next!
This is the time of the semester when it is easy to get discouraged about your job search. Companies that recruit on campus have been here to host recruiting events and attend career fairs. Positions for which employers hold first-round interviews on campus have been posted on Handshake; those interviews have been held. From what you can see, recruiting slows down. BUT that doesn’t mean that your career search should slow down! Rather, your efforts should continue, but with a new focus.
Now is a great time to reflect on the efforts you’ve made toward your job search, and the outcome of your efforts. Re-visit your job search strategy, and revise it based on your experience to date. If you did not read Career Services Notes dated September 28, please do so now! Bottom line: the job you ultimately find will most likely be one that you discovered through your professional network. Therefore, increasing your knowledge of your target industry and functional position – and making professional connections with folks in the companies that interest you – should be a big part of your job search efforts at this time.

Information on Handshake
Upload your Resume on Handshake
Every student is asked to upload your resume to your Handshake account, and designate your ‘generic’ resume as “Visible” on your Handshake account profile. This makes your resume available to Career Services staff and company recruiters who search for candidates meeting certain eligibility requirements.
Note: If you have uploaded your resume on Handshake, but NOT designated it “Visible” on Profile, your resume is NOT available to company recruiters and Career Services staff who search for students who meet certain eligibility requirements. (Explained in another way: if you have uploaded your resume on Handshake, but have NOT designated one version of your resume to be “Visible” on your Handshake Profile, then the only way any company will get your resume is if you submit your resume for a specific position on the Handshake job board.)
If your resume is not “Visible” on Handshake, you are missing out on opportunities to be found!
Peer Advisors in the Career Studio can help you upload your resume and designate it as “Visible”, if you have questions. They’re available from 10:00am until 4:00pm, Monday through Friday, for your convenience.
Gies Graduate Programs Career Management Foundations
Many students completed the Career Management Foundations online course before arriving on campus, and received feedback on their resume and LinkedIn profile online. Thank you for completing the survey on this course; your feedback will be helpful as we improve the course for next year!
The content of the Career Management Foundations Course remains open for your use throughout the year. So whenever you want to refresh your knowledge on
- Resume Writing
- Building Professional Relationships – Using LinkedIn
- Preparing for your Job Search
Login to the course at learn.illinois.edu and use your credentials to access the course.
Now that you are on campus, the online course “submit your resume/LinkedIn Profile / Worksheet” features have been turned off. Career Services Advisors are here to meet with you – in person – to review your resume, review your LinkedIn profile and discuss your career goals.
Connect on LinkedIn
Check your LinkedIn account. Have you sent me a request to connect on LinkedIn? If not, please send me a request! Once we’re connected, and you’re searching for LinkedIn connections at companies that interest you, you might find people you’re interested in -- with whom I’m connected!
If you haven’t heard, I only accept requests to connect on LinkedIn from people I’ve met. Please, if you have not yet, schedule an appointment to meet with me to discuss your career goals and how Career Services can help you work toward your goals.
LinkedIn Group for Business Graduate Students
While you’re on LinkedIn, request to join the 733 current members of “Illinois BCS: Specialized Master’s Students & Alumni”. When you’re searching for connections in your target companies, you may find an MSA, MSBA, MSF, MSM or MSTM alum who is a fellow member of this LinkedIn Group.
