ATMS 140 - Climate and Global Change

Evidence provided by climate scientists shows that the Earth is warming globally, and that greenhouse gasses emitted by human activity is the primary contributor, yet controversy abounds. In ATMS 140, Climate and Global Change, we will unravel this controversy through a discussion of questions such as: What is climate? How is our climate changing? (... and hasn’t the climate always changed?) How are human activities contributing to current climate change? How will climate change affect us? Are there solutions?

This course satisfies the General Education Criteria for: Nat Sci & Tech - Phys Sciences

ATMS 120 – Severe and Hazardous Weather

Extreme weather and climate events have impact every region of the United States and every country around the world. This course will open the door to an understanding of these severe and hazardous weather events and allow each student to develop an appreciation for the complexities and power of the weather. The most extreme manifestations of weather and climate are analyzed in terms of their physical basis and their historical, economic, and human consequences. Emphasis is placed on the interplay between technological advances, the evolution of meteorology as a science, and the impacts of extreme weather. This course will cover everything from the understanding of satellites and radars to studying extreme events such as winter storms, floods, thunderstorms, tornadoes, and hurricanes.

This course satisfies the General Education Criteria for: Nat Sci & Tech - Phys Sciences and Quantitative Reasoning II
