Wolof at UIUC

Leslie Lewis |  Associate Dir, Academic Success - Tuesday, May 28, 2019
 Course Information
If you are looking for a language to help you fullfill the Language other than English requirement, consider taking Wolof.  Wolof is spoken by over 80% of the population of Sene-gal and is also spoken in The Gambia and Mauritania. It is the language of the Wolof people and is one of the principal languages of Africa. Wolof has no tone and does not conjugate its verbs. Personal pronouns are conjugated to express actions in tenses and forms.
Although French and English are official languages in Senegal and The Gambia, local languages such as Pu-laar, Wolof, and Mandingo are used much more widely in business, popular culture, and everyday life. Study-ing Wolof also opens up opportunities to engage with the arts, literature, and history of West Africa.

Please touch base with your advisor to discuss how these courses can suit your plans.
