MSA Career News - (Final) Summer Edition Vol. 8
Hello MSA students!
Congratulations on finishing your first semester as MSA students! It was a very eventful summer semester and I hope you enjoyed getting to know the Gies College of Business and the University of Illinois. It may have been a quiet semester here on campus, but trust me, it is about to get very crowded. In fact, many underclassmen have started arriving this weekend! If you see a new student roaming around looking lost, please be kind and point them to the right direction! You can do that now that you've been an Illini for a full semester!
As promised, newsletters will be longer but less detailed starting now! I will assume you have been reading our career newsletters all summer and developed an understanding of how they work. I will include more links and fewer explanations.

Prepare for Fall Semester - Summer Break To-do List
Complete the "Accounting Career Exploration Worksheet" to guide you on your search. Use the Excel spreadsheet (or create your own!) to keep track of your research. Review the Preparing for Fall Recruiting slides for suggested videos.

Handshake Preparation for Fall Career Fair - Profiles, Jobs, Employers
5 Ways to Make Handshake Work for YOU
- Upload your updated resume - Make your resume “Visible on Profile” so that your resume is included when recruiters search Handshake for resumes of students meeting certain selection criteria.
- Complete and Update your Profile - the more information you provide in Handshake, the more targeted information will be “pushed” to you via Handshake – and the more likely it is that your profile will be included when recruiters search Handshake for students with your profile.
- Preview companies attending On-Campus Career Fairs
- “Events” > “Fair Search” > select a fair > click on “View All Employers” on the left side to get the company lists
- Make your notes to yourself now, to use at the Career Fair
- Look in the “Jobs on Handshake” section of the company description, to see what positions they’ll focus recruiting on at the Career Fair
- If there is not a “Jobs on Handshake” section, make a note to yourself to check back at least a week before the career fair to see what positions are posted on Handshake; many companies do not post actual positions on Handshake until shortly before the career fair
- You can also check the company website to see what positions are posted. Keep in mind that not all positions on the company website will be included in the company’s on-campus recruiting efforts
- "Favorite" Employers and Positions/Jobs - this will inform the Artificial Intelligence that powers Handshake of your preferences so that the suggestions Handshake provides are as relevant as possible to your search.
- Also – set your “Notifications” so that you get a message when the companies you “Favorite” add a job or an event on Handshake!
- Look ahead at “Events” to stay on top of company-initiated recruiting events on campus. As of today, several accounting firm events are already on the calendar including:
Ways to Get Involved This Year - Accounting and Consulting Organizations
Most, if not all, of these student organizations are going to Quad Day, where they will provide you updated recruitment and membership information.
LinkedIn Specialized Masters Group and Networking
Several of you have asked me about how to find networking targets and how to conduct informational interviews. When your LinkedIn profile is ready, join our LinkedIn group: Illinois BCS: Specialized Master's Students & Alumni to search for alumni.
To learn more about informational interviewing - why they are useful and how to start them, watch Informational Interviewing by Barbara Bruno on Lynda.com. You can also make an appointment to come see a career advisor for more suggestions!
Career Foundations Online Course - Student Satisfaction Survey
Did you complete the "Career Foundations" Online course over the summer? If yes, we would love to hear your feedback! Please let us know what you liked and how we can improve!
Please click on the survey link below. The survey should take no longer than 2 minutes.

Useful Resource Spotlight: Quinncia (Resume Feedback and Interview Practice) - going away August 31st!
Did you use Quinncia as part of our "Career Foundations" Online Course? Now that you have experience reviewing and updating your resume, you should upload your new resume to see if you have a better score! You will be surprised!
Another great Quinncia feature is the video interviewing practice platform! Many employers use video or digital interviews as their first-round screening tool now. It is not easy talking to a camera with no one to respond to you! Practice this unique type of interviewing on Quinncia today! Quinncia provides a very realistic simulation of digital interviewing and the system will ask you questions relevant to your degree.
Log onto the site from the link on the GiesGroups - Business Graduate Programs portal. You should all have access to this portal but if you are having trouble, come to Drop-In Advising for more help. Register for an account using your @illinois.edu email address.
This resource will be going away August 31st, so please use before then!
I hope you have a great break! I look forward to seeing those of you still in town, but otherwise, I will see you again in the Fall semester!
