A message from Dean Jackson:

Undoubtedly, the end of the semester is on everyone’s mind. However, with these being my last remarks for the semester, I want to remind us all about the theme of our imminent holiday season; that is the theme of “giving.” Yes, generosity is always welcome and there need not be a reason to extend a helping hand, but I hope you will join me in leaning into the surprising compulsion to give when we see a need. Like some of you, I’ve been following the Star Wars series on Disney + called “Mandalorian”. In almost every episode, the warrior protagonist is faced with self-sacrifice to benefit others, explaining his motivation with the simple phrase, “This is the way”. I’ll admit that I watch the show to get another glimpse at Baby Yoda, but I’m inspired by the simple logic of giving because…there is need. I understand that it may be asking too much, as this semester has taken a toll on each of us in untold ways. Nevertheless, I’m challenging us to find ways to give to others this season. Perhaps in giving, we will rediscover all for which we are grateful. Perhaps giving will restore our spirits that have been pummeled by loss and divisiveness. As we consider how best to feel grateful in the face of adversity, maybe, just maybe…this is the way.
