A Message from Dean Jackson:

Whether you’re already in Champaign or still on your way, “Welcome back!” As we look towards starting classes on Tuesday, let’s not look past Monday. Monday, we observe Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day (or MLK Day). I hope most of you are familiar with much of what Dr. King accomplished for the many that society often overlooks. At this moment, I’m recalling my visit to the Lincoln Memorial with my son (who was ten years old at the time). We both stood beside the engraved stone that marks the spot where Dr. King delivered his famous “I have a dream” speech. Each time I watch video of King’s speech, I am certainly touched by his soaring voice and poignant words, but I’m also moved by what else I see in the video. As the cameras pan to the crowd, there are people from all walks of life standing together. In truth, there were many who considered Dr. King an enemy, and the unsettling truth is that there are some today who lament the impact Dr. King has had on the history of our country. But what we see in the crowd on the day of King’s speech represents a glimpse of what the American experiment was meant to be; unity, despite difference. Or as inscribed on our US coinage, “E Pluribus Unum” (out of many, one). My challenge to us all is to take time on Monday to reflect on the possibilities of the American experiment that remain before us…in our homes, in our communities, and at Gies. After all, MLK Day belongs to all of us.
