Gies Peer Advising Program

Peer Advisors are Gies College of Business undergraduate students who partner with the Gies Academic Advising team to support their peers academically and personally. Peer Advisors complete a semester-long training course and are able to provide the most up-to-date advice regarding academic planning, curriculum, and policies to assist their peers in academic decision-making. In addition to joining through Zoom, Students are welcome to email question to peerconnect@illinois.edu. Use our Schedule by Major, Schedule by Minor, and Schedule by Language as a tool to help you determine which Peer Advisor you want to work with; schedules will be posted by the 10th day of the semester.

  • Q: Who can use Peer Advising?

We assist current Undergraduate students who are either in the Gies College of Business or plan to transfer (ICT) into the college, as well both declared and prospective Business Minor students.

  • Q: What can I expect from virtual Peer Advising?

You will be greeted individually by one of our Team Leads. We check in one person at a time, so it is possible to have a short wait at times. Once admitted to the room, the Team Lead will ask for your information including your name, netId, iCard number, and your question. The Team Lead will then assign you to a breakout room where you will work individually with one Peer Advisor or professional advisor.

  • Q: What can I expect from on-campus Peer Advising?

Go to the Undergraduate Success Lab (1041 BIF) and check-in for Peer Advising. You will be greeted by the student worker at the block I and asked to swipe in with your iCard. One of the Peer Advisors will invite you to sit at their table and assist with any question you have.

  • Q: What questions can Peer Advisors answer?

We partner with the Gies Undergraduate Academic Advising team to help students with course selection, four year/graduation plans, study abroad course planning, major exploration and declaration, transfer courses (Transferology), Business Minor questions, DARS, and academic policy. We are happy to help you find your textbooks, navigate course platforms and Gies Groups, explore majors and minors, and share tips for how to get involved on campus! We love sharing our undergraduate experiences with others. Peer Advisors are excellent at communication and problem-solving.

  • Q: What if I have a major or minor-specific question?

Use our Schedule by Major to identify the Peer Advisors who share your major or major of interest. Click here to view the spring 2022 Schedule by Major. Peer Advisors will share their experience with the major curriculum and can assist with graduation (four year) plans.

  • Q: How do I become a Gies Peer Advisor?

Enroll in BUS 199 "Coaching for Success" section N for the spring 2023 semester! BUS 199 is a spring-only course that that is a 1-credit hour, graded course that will serve as a training course for future Peer Advisors! After successful completion of the course, students can officially join the team for fall 2023. Questions about becoming a part of our team? Email a Peer Advising Coordinator at peerconnect@illinois.edu or Undergraduate Affairs at undergrads@business.illinois.edu
