Late Course Drops & Incomplete Appeals

Late Course Drops

  • A Late Drop requires College approval.
  • This form requires the student to submit a personal statement explaining the circumstances for this request. Additional documentation is also recommended.
  • Poor performance in a course is NOT a justifiable reason for a Drop.
  • Gies Business students first late drop request does not require extenuating circumstances. A personal statement is still required to explain this selection, and what the student has learned from this experience.
  • You may want to consider grade replacement instead of a late drop. Please review the grade replacement policy and consult with your academic advisor.
  • Student Code policy available here.
  • DEADLINE: Due before or on Reading Day of the semester you completed the course.

Incomplete Grades

  • An Incomplete Grade requires BOTH instructor approval and College approval (we will reach out to your instructor after you complete this form OR you may attach evidence of instructor approval below).
  • This process requires the student to submit the appropriate form, which includes a personal statement explaining the circumstances for this request.
  • Approved incomplete coursework must be completed by the end of the 8th week of the following semester (for example, Fall incompletes must be resolved by week 8 of the following Spring).
  • If an incomplete grade is not changed by instructor by the 8th week an "F" will automatically be assigned for this course.
  • This option is not available if you have completed the final exam.
  • Student code policy available here.

Gies Retroactive Semester Withdrawal/Retroactive Course Drop

The Gies College of Business may consider petitions from students to withdraw from a semester (or drop individual courses in a term) after the conclusion of the final examination and/or submission of final grades. For consideration of this petition, a student must have experienced extraordinary extenuating circumstances beyond the student's control that prevented the student from initiating a withdrawal or course drop during the semester. The Gies College of Business expects that the extenuating circumstances cited in the petition can be documented and/or verified.

It is your responsibility to check on the implications such a retroactive course drop or withdrawal would have, if any, on:

  • Financial aid and all related financial impacts
  • Degree completion
  • Participation in intercollegiate athletics
  • Student employment and extracurricular involvement
  • Insurance coverage

Due to federal privacy laws (FERPA), the information and status of this petition cannot be shared with anyone other than the student completing the petition.

If your petition is approved, the course(s) will still appear on your transcript with a "W" for "withdrawal," however "W's" have no bearing on your gpa.

Once a student's degree has been conferred, retroactive withdrawal/course drop petitions are no longer reviewed or approved.
