Studying Abroad?  Please Read!

If you are interested in a Non-Gies Global Program please connect with the unit on campus that sponsors that program (ACES, LAS, etc…) about the abroad process including application deadlines and requirements. Your major/college advisor can assist you with this. If you are a declared Business Minor, we are happy to review what classes are offered at that program and how/if they will transfer back to Illinois to satisfy requirements for your Business Minor.

Tools to help get started

1. My Study Abroad Program Search

This allows students to search based on different criteria such as Location, Term, Housing options, Language preference. We recommend that students start with just a desired location first.

A full list of all programs in that country/city will pop up. Each program page has tabs at top that give info. about the program such as estimated cost, housing, application criteria/deadlines, courses and scholarship info.

2. Course approval database

This shows students the courses that have been offered at the abroad program and how they will transfer back to Illinois.

For declared BUS Minors taking courses abroad

1. If you are planning to study abroad you can take BUS Minor coursework in any format (online, in-person) that they are offered at the abroad campus as long as you use the abroad course approval database to make sure the classes you are taking are direct equivalents to the required core courses for the minor (BADM 310, BADM 320, ACCY 200 and FIN 221). The only exception is when taking a BUS minor elective course that are articulated as either BADM 3 - - or BADM 4 - - with no direct course equivalents at Illinois. These classes can still be used to satisfy BUS minor electives. A BADM 300 or 400 level class that has a direct equivalent to a BADM class at Illinois but is NOT on the list pf approved BUS Minor electives can be used to satisfy your minor requirements.

2. Upon completion of your abroad experience and receipt of your official transcript at Illinois, students can email the BUS Minor email to request a minor modification to have any BADM 3 - - or BADM 4 - - classes correctly displayed as satisfying BUS Minor requirements. The processing of the form typically takes 5-10 days before it will appear on your DARS under the Business Minor requirements.

3. All courses taken abroad that are being used to complete major/minor requirements must be successfully completed for a letter grade and not S/U or C/NC grading options

4. Campus 299 Advisors

If a class is not in the abroad database but you would like to take it while abroad, please contact the appropriate campus 299 advisor. This will require either completion of an online form or an email to the 299 advisor with the abroad course description and syllabus. Once they review and approve, they can either sign the fillable study abroad course approval form for your college indicating what class/how it would transfer back to Illinois, or you can include their email confirmation with your course approval form and have it count as a 300 level or above BADM elective for your BUS Minor please follow this process for approval
