Student Response Tasks

Do not wait!  The earlier you respond, the sooner the Student Success Team can help you develop plans to keep you on track.  When developing your plans for recovery, you may be encouraged to complete the following tasks...

Academic Planning

While degree plans are intended to provide you with accurate information, the final responsibility for knowing and completing degree requirements is your responsibility. Course offerings and enrollment restrictions should be confirmed with your Degree Audit Report (DARS) and the Course Explorer.

Individual Learning Plans

Create plans for common first and second year coursework.

Terms to Know

As a Gies student, you'll come across many terms related to various policies and systems. This guide is designed to help you understand key terms, policies, and procedures that may influence your academic and personal decisions.

Cancellation

Students can cancel a course by 11:59 p.m. CT the day before the semester starts and won’t be charged tuition or fees for it. This is done through your Student Self-Service Portal.

Commencement

Optional college ceremonies celebrating the graduation of students with completed degree requirements.

Convocation

Optional college ceremonies celebrating the graduation of students with completed degree requirements.

Course Explorer

Degree Audit Report (DARS)

A tool that shows which degree requirements you’ve finished and which classes you took for them, as well as what you still need to complete and the classes you can take to do it.

Drop

Removing or “dropping” a course from your schedule. When you drop a course by the drop deadline for the term through Self-Service, it will not show up on your transcript. If you drop by the deadline to drop with a W, the course will appear with a W recorded which does not impact GPA calculations.

Grade Replacement

All undergraduate students have the option to repeat courses in which they earned a C- or below and use the new grade to replace the grade they earned in the first attempt.

Graduation

Finishing all degree requirements and submitting an application to graduate.

Incomplete

Approved extension of time to complete the final examination or other requirements of the course. Requires both instructor and college approval.

Late Course Change

After the 10th day of instruction, students who want to either add a full-term course or switch a section within a full-term course must receive permission to make this change. It is highly recommended that you first speak with the instructor of the course that you are wanting to make this late change to get their approval before proceeding.

Late Course Drop

Removing or “dropping” a course from your schedule after the deadline. This requires college approval, a form submission, and a personal statement explaining the circumstances.

Part of Term (POT)

Classes that meet for only part of the semester and follow a different schedule than full-semester courses.

Retroactive Course Drop

Drop of an individual course in a term after the conclusion of the final examination and/or submission of final grades. A student must have experienced extraordinary extenuating circumstances beyond the student's control that prevented the student from initiating a course drop during the semester.

Retroactive Course Withdrawal

Withdrawing from a term after the conclusion of the final examination and/or submission of final grades. A student must have experienced extraordinary extenuating circumstances beyond the student's control that prevented the student from initiating a withdrawal during the semester.

Withdrawal

Officially leaving all your courses for a semester. Students must request a formal withdrawal through their college. If you stop attending without completing this process, you will still be charged tuition and fees and receive grades for your classes.
